Concept

Chroma is a tangible tool that encourages playful interaction with colour based on colour theory. The system prompts the user to create a specific colour using the three primary colours; red, blue and yellow. The user may complete the task by applying pressure to one or multiple pressure pads of the colour(s) they decide to mix. These pressure pads are equipped sensors which register user input. The amount of pressure corresponds to the hue of the colour, i.e. a soft touch will generate a lighter colour whereas applying more pressure will generate a darker colour. If the user struggles to find the correct combination, the system will generate hints to assist overall understanding.

The concept can be altered to fit a variety of purposes and target audiences:

  • Testing colour perception and fine motoring skills through an interactive game, i.e. use the three colours to match generated colours with varying accuracy within a given time frame.
  • Teaching children and adults colour theory by mixing colours to give butterflies a specified colour. These butterflies come alive as animations across the screen for each correct response.
  • Creating a mood board in a public space.

How to Interact

  1. Put hands on pressure boards

The user uses their hands to apply pressure to one or multiple sensor pads simultaneously.

  1. Apply pressure

The amount of pressure corresponds to the darkness of the colour output, i.e. less pressure for brighter colours and more pressure for darker colours.

  1. Observe colour output

The pressure applied to the pressure sensors will output a colour on the screen which is responsive to the user input.

Inspiration

The concept and interaction mode is inspired by playful interactions using colour and responsive art such as the Sketch Aquarium in teamLab Borderless museum in Tokyo, Japan. Furthermore, the concept aims to explore colour perception and neuroscience related to visual stimuli.

Floor Colouring

What is it?

Floor colouring is an interactive device, mainly composed of a mobile projector and a bracelet that allow one or more users to interact with the floor in novel ways. This mobile device can project a painting onto the floor, and then the user can adjust the colour of the paint through the bracelet, and then colour the different parts of the painting by mopping the floor.

Interactions:

So when users interact with this device, there are three main parts, paintings, bracelets and the projector. For paintings, users can choose paintings with different difficulty levels through the projector, that means paintings with low difficulty level have fewer colour blocks that need to be filled in, while paintings with high difficulty have more complicated blocks need to be filled in. In addition, users can draw some of their own content in advance and upload it to the projector, so they can customise their paintings. The size of the painting can be adjusted according to the size of the floor to be cleaned, such as zoom in or zoom out. For the bracelet, the user can use the bracelet to select different colours when colouring the painting. The device also allows one or more users to interact and collaborate with each other to complete the colouring process. In addition, when a user finishes the colouring of the painting, they can share their filled paintings on some social media, so that to enable users to socially connect with others. The projector is mobile, so it can be moved around their rooms. It can also show the coloured content onto the floor in real time. In addition, users can also use the records in the projector to print their own work through the printer.

Context of use:

The device can also be used in different scenarios, such as at home or in some public places, like parks. By using it at home, it can increase users’ interest in cleaning, and enable them to cooperate with their families to record the process of cleaning each time and enhance their intimate relationship with family members. In some public places, it can enhance people's awareness of public health and can also serve as a new way of social interaction.

Description

Getting up in the morning is one of the hardest tasks of the day for many people. Especially those who are night owls and enjoys staying up late. Getting out of bed will never be easy or comfortable when you really don’t want to so a solution could be to make the bed environment less comfortable. In order to find out what makes the bed so difficult to leave one must ask themselves what are the factors that makes is so. One elements is the bed cover, it’s what keeps you warm and comfy. If you take that away the idea of staying in bed becomes less desirable.

The idea is based on a device that is attached to your covers and that when the alarm goes off rolls up the covers to a mechanical roller. However, in order to force the person to get up the cover cannot be unrolled before the alarm is turned off which acquires the person to repeat a randomised order of light of a matt of the floor. This ensures so the person cannot simply drag the covers back over themselves and also forces them to physically get up in order to turn off the alarm. The device can be connected to a screen of their own or the users phone i order to set the alarm.

Inspiration

The inspiration behind this idea comes from a cartoon that I'm well familiar with that is shown on TV every Christmas. In this clip Donald has to wake up and get ready and has an alarm clock that rolls in his covers and then smack him on his feet. This is the kind of "old" version of the idea with the use of an old type alarm clock and also that the alarm turns it self off. (Go to 2:17)
